Module 3 Assignment

24 hour media consumption log

8:00 am

When I woke up, Modern Family was streaming from Hulu on my TV because I tend to fall asleep with it on, and it will loop all through the night. I typically always have my TV on because I can’t stand silence. The media consumption is low here because I am not paying attention to it most of the time. Again, the TV shows are more of a background thing for me.

As soon as I was fully awake, check my text messages, missed calls, and emails in bed. Emails are the most important for me because my school email and my work email typically have something important that I need to engage within a timely manner, so I make those top priorities.

After responding to important emails, I went on Instagram and Snapchat while I waited for my 9:20 doctor's appointment. I don’t really go on social media with the intent to browse- I’m on it more to check if I have any messages or notifications, interact accordingly, then get off. In the past, I have invested too much time browsing on social media and realized that I just wasted my time with no objective. Further, I try to strictly post my own content then get off the app while keeping all of my notifications off to avoid temptation. This helps me manage my social media consumption in a healthy way that works for me. I will say that my Instagram feed is actually very intriguing and stimulating for me because it does not focus on showing people I follow, but rather content about my top areas of interest such as nature, satisfying videos, encouraging quotes, and NFT related posts. 9:20 am

I logged into doxy.me for my virtual video appointment with my psychiatrist via a video link I got through text message. This process is really efficient because everything is quickly linked and set up in comparison to more traditional doctors appointments.

10:00 am

After my appointment, I used the Walgreens app to pre-pay for my prescriptions to skip the line at the pharmacy. All of my billing info and insurance information is already set up within the app, so this process is extremely convenient and efficient as well. On the way to Walgreens, I listened to a Joel Osteen podcast through Carplay on Spotify

When I was about 10 minutes away, I decided to order a coffee through the Starbucks mobile app. Again, my billing information is pre-stored in the app, which makes online ordering quick and easy. My phone actually gives me a suggestion on my homepage that offers a shortcut to placing an order for the exact drink that I get every day. After getting my order curbside, I went to Walgreens and got my prescription with one easy QR code scan.

NOON

When I got home I opened my laptop and started digging deeper into my work emails. I realized that I have three zoom meetings and the first one starts in an hour. I took a few minutes to look presentable and prep resources for this particular meeting. This prepping operation includes logging onto websites we use to collaborate and organize projects at work such as slack, notion, and google workspace. All of these programs make communication within my team much easier.

3:00 PM

After finishing up my last meeting of the day, I worked on the tasks I was given during the meetings. This consists of me editing videos for clients on my computers for a few hours. During this process, I have to download a lot of stock footage and animation files. Sometimes the downloads concern me because there is always a risk for viruses, especially at the scale that I download media.

4:00 pm

While I get ready for dinner with my boyfriend, I put on youtube videos for background noise. I love to watch a YouTuber named CodyKo because it oddly makes me feel like there is someone in the room with me talking to me. On top of the Youtube video, I also listen to music on Spotify. I am very connected with music as an art and all it entails, so lyrics mean a lot to me. Further, I really felt the lyrics to a song I was listening to, so I decided to post it on Instagram with the intent to 1) share the song with others because I like it, 2) show the lyrics to people for them to connect and relate.

5:00 pm

When I finished getting ready, I took a selfie video in a new crewneck for my upcoming clothing line called Broken Population. As usual, I got on Instagram to post the story then get off the app. I posted this to subtly introduce the concept to my peers and followers. In addition to that story post, I also thought the sunset looked amazing so I posted a video of my dog and the sunset to show my appreciation for the view.

In terms of replies and view levels, I get on my Instagram and Snapchat content, I try not to rely on those factors because I don't want to develop a mindset where it's used as a source of self-worth and perception.

6:00 pm

I listened to more music on Spotify on the way to dinner and used Apple Maps to get there. Ironically, I just realized that I saw a BJ’s ad on my Instagram feed in the morning (shown in feed example) and that's actually where we ended up going to dinner. This demonstrates the data collection/digital marketing structure that manipulates the consumer’s thinking and behavior. While at Bj’s, I posted a video of my dinner and my boyfriend onto my Snapchat story for fun.

8:00 PM

When we got home from dinner, we sat in bed and watched Ozark on Netflix because season 4 was just released. While recapping on season 3 to refresh our memory, I got onto my computer and my iPad to check my schedule for the next day in terms of work meetings and assignment due dates. After wrapping up on my computer, I checked Snapchat and Instagram to respond to my friend's engagement and messages from the content I posted throughout the day. Like I said in the beginning, I have notifications turned off for social media so I usually go hours without getting on. Once I respond to important interactions I put my phone on do not disturb and pay full attention to the show. I ended up falling asleep during the second episode of Ozark. I guess I start and end my days with TV shows as my media consumption of choice. That's all for my 24-hour media consumption diary, thanks for reading!
